I've Got the Heart

Lyrics:

by Violet Rae Downey@2005

Used to be so easy, now it's harder each day
To look ahead and not dwell on where I've been.
Brings me to my knees, but I'm not going away
Now, I may not have much, but I've got the heart

Chorus
I've got the heart to see it through
I've got the heart for loving you
I've got the heart to make things right
I've got the heart to love all night
I've got the heart to let you feel
What is here is all that's real
I've got the heart, you know it's true
I've got the heart.

Got to change direction and be willing to bend
Or you'll miss life's little twists that happen off the line
After all life happens while it's waiting to end
And you'll get back more than you give if you've got the heart

I've got the heart to carry on
I've got the heart to share this song
I've got the heart to sing the truth
Far beyond my fears of youth
I've got the heart and that's much more
Than I had in years before
I've got the heart you know it's true
I've got the heart
I've got the heart for loving you,
I've got the heart
I've got the heart.

Keep your eyes on the road

And your hands on the wheel

And your mind on the line that keeps reeling you toward the light

You can't read all the signs

And your map is on the floor

Like the ashes of your dreams

Overflowing this heart tonight

No one will know that you did the best you could

No one will guess your intentions all were good

No one will say, "Well done, just let it go."

For right now it's just you and this broken radio

Broken radio, broken radio

Broken radio, broken radio

Now the rain is drumming down with a signal all its own

"I'm a child of these hills...Country roads, take me home.

Look away, Dixieland,,,make the world go away...

Help me make it through the night...Silent Night....Oh, Holy Night!"

No one will know if the broadcast travels far

No  one will guess it's a playlist in your car

No one will care if you rush or take it slow

For tonight it's just you on your broken radio

Broken radio, broken radio

Broken radio, broken radio

(Bridge)

The songs take me back to when the world was new

When transistor dreams under my pillow grew

"Moon River, I'm going your way!"

Where did my drifter go? Oh, Oh, o, oh, o

Keep your eyes on the road

And your hands on the wheel

And your mind on the line

that keeps reeling your toward the light

You can't read all the signs

And your map is on the floor

Like the ashes of your dreams

Overflowing this heart tonight

No one will know that you did the best you could

No one will guess your intentions all were good

No one to say, "Come on home. It's time, you know."

In the end it's just you and your broken radio

Broken radio, broken radio

Broken radio, broken radio

Keep your eyes on the road

And your hands on the wheel

And your mind on the line

That keeps reeling you in, reeling you in, reeling you in to the light

Be True

Story:

I taught high school for 18 years where I was privileged to share HAMLET with soon-to-graduate seniors. This was my farewell to them.

1. A girl has gotta do whatever a girl has gotta do

Nobody else can walk this planet or change your stars for you

There's a world out there that will steal your innocent dreams from you

Piece out your crazy quilt plans and rip out the seams so blue

So, if you're asking for my advice,

Just ask me once, and I'll tell you twice:

Be true, be true

Let no one paint a face on you

2. A guy has gotta do whatever a guy has gotta do

Nobody else can read the blueprints unfolding for your view

There's a world out there that will steal your innocent dreams from you

Punch out the light in your eyes and muffle your screams so blue

So, if you're asking for my advice,

Just ask me once, and I'll tell you twice:

Be true, be true

Let no man force a mask on you

Bridge

Although we care so much

None of us can walk this road for you

But on the sidelines we'll be hoping

Your friends will always be there hoping

3. A friend has gotta do whatever a friend has gotta do

Be there to lend my ear or turn a mirror toward you

'Cause there's a world out there that will steal your innocent dreams from you

Dark out the light of the sun and filter its beams to blue

So if you're asking for my advice, just ask me once and I'll tell you twice:

Be true, be true

The captain of your soul is you
